Things to do in Frankland River

Wineries

Frankland River is a unique viticulture wine region in the Great Southern of Western Australia. Due to its warm days and cool nights, the area produces some of the state’s best wines.

Take a day or two to visiting the modern cellar doors of Frankland River.

Lake Poorrarecup

Lake Poorrarecup is lovely attraction about 17km out of Frankland River town.

It is especially nice to visit in the warmer months for swimming, it is also quite popular for skiing. It used to be a natural water lake but these days it is twice as salty as ocean water.

Camping is available but fee’s do apply so please get in touch with the ranger for more details.

Wildflowers

The wildflower walk in Frankland River begins at the end of Herbert Street. Spectacular wildflowers, particularly orchids, can be found along this walk from June all the way through to December.

Bird Watching

Spot native birds in and around the Frankland River townsite, in abundance especially at our lakes include, black cockatoo’s, ibis, mistletoe bird, kookaburra, blue wren, honey eater, lorikeet, galah and 28 parrots to name a few.

Heritage Trail

If you love history and want to know more about Frankland River’s, then the local heritage trail will give you plenty to see and some insight into the area’s history. Sites of interest include the old Post Office, the local horse watering trough, one of WA’s first racecourses, Kenny’s tank and Yeriminup Reserve.

The Frankland River

The Frankland River is the largest river by volume in the region and the eighth largest in the state.

It is a great place to take the canoe’s with the family for a lovely, peaceful paddle up and down the waterways.

Lake Nunijup

Lake Nunijup is a peaceful scenic place to visit. The lake water ranges between fresh and saline. It’s a popular place with the locals especially when its warmer weather for swimming. There are picnic tables, BBQ facilities, toilets, and camping allowed in designated areas only.

Please take all of your rubbish out with you. Fires are prohibited, no pets are allowed and there is no potable water. There is mobile phone service, if your provider is Telstra.

Unicup Lake

Lake Unicup is ideal for birdwatching, there is a makeshift hut at the lake that used to be used as the water ski club, nowadays skiing is not allowed on the lake. You can stop here to pick up walk trails, use the toilets or use the picnic areas.

Lake Muir

Lake Muir is a freshwater lake. Lake Muir has a surface area of 46 square kilometres.

Lake Muir is a wetland of International Importance.

It is a popular stop with travelers, where they can get out and stretch their legs as they walk the boardwalk through the internationally significant wetlands to an elevated bird hide with expansive views over the lake.
